5 Tarot Spreads Every Beginner Should Know

One of the first things new readers want to learn is spreads — the specific patterns of card placement that structure a reading. It can be overwhelming: there are hundreds of spreads, from single-card daily draws to elaborate 21-card life-mapping layouts.

Start simple. The most powerful readings often use the fewest cards. Here are five spreads that will serve you for years.

1. The Single Card Draw

The single most powerful practice in tarot. Each morning, pull one card and sit with it. Ask: what energy or theme is this card inviting me to notice today? Carry the card's image in your mind throughout the day. Revisit it at night: where did this theme show up?

The single card teaches you the cards better than any book.

2. The Three-Card Spread

Position 1 — Past (what has been influencing this situation) Position 2 — Present (what is active right now) Position 3 — Future (what is emerging if things continue as they are)

This spread can be adapted endlessly: Mind / Body / Spirit. Situation / Action / Outcome. You / The Other Person / The Relationship.

3. The Celtic Cross

The classic ten-card spread. Slightly complex for beginners, but once learned, extraordinarily rich. Best for situations that need deep exploration rather than quick guidance.

4. The Yes/No Spread

Three cards drawn face down. Flip them: upright cards are yes, reversed are no. Two out of three determines the answer. Use for simple, direct questions.

5. The Monthly Check-In

Four cards: one for each week of the month ahead. Pull on the first day of the month. Review at each week's turn. An excellent practice for developing long-range intuitive skill.

Whatever spread you use: pause before flipping. Hold the question clearly in your mind. Breathe. Then look.
